Welcome to the winter edition of the Pinto Post! Even when the weather rolls in, volunteers press on through ice, snow rain and wind to ensure the wild horses of the Virginia Range stay safe, healthy and protected. Read all about exhilarating rescues, exciting announcements, heartwarming stories and so much more!

Fertility Control Update

The AWHC team has a very exciting announcement this month about a new scientific initiative that if it works, will create the infrastructure necessary to scale up humane PZP management programs in herds across the West! Wow 2021 is starting off with a bang! It’s been a busy month with many exciting updates, from heartwarming adoption stories to impressive public safety initiatives. Read about them below!

Monthly Highlights

We sat down virtually with Dorothy Nylen to talk about being bitten by the horse crazy bug as a young girl, the majesty of the wild horse, and living with her own rescues. This is a story you won’t want to miss!

Also this month, meet Rapunzel, a darling mare who Deborah Sutherland watched take her first steps as a baby. She grew up and became a mom and Deb watched again as Rapunzel’s own three babies took their first steps. This heartwarming tale will bring a smile to your face, so be sure to read it below.

Happy Tails Rescues

This month read about an exhausting 6 and a half hour rescue by the incredible Technical Large Animal Rescue team as well as a much needed needed reminder aimed to keep wild horses wild!

Please use the above number if you see horses or foals injured, sick, or at risk. Where does your call go? Your call goes to a 24/7 answering service that will connect with an on-call volunteer. From there volunteers, proper agencies and organizations will be dispatched. This includes, but is not limited to, local organizations, a large animal rescue team, and the sheriff's office in the corresponding area.
